A few things plague a busy adult:
When I was a young professional, I gladly gave any and all the time I had in order to impress the leadership. We work for recognition. Recognition in a healthy work environment affords us access to high profile projects and eventually the promotion and/or status we are chasing.
Later in my career I had the privilege of getting career coaching. It opened my eyes to what I was giving up: I was exchanging my time and health for status and financial freedom. Both of which meant very little if I was burnt out and ill all the time.
For most young adults the work will be to learn to stop. Cultivate the habit of starting with meditation. I start with coffee and Bible study. Talking to God about the things I’m afraid of and the things I hope for and dream about is a very soothing start to what often unfolds as a hectically busy day. In that time, I also quiet down after I’ve spoken much to listen. Your insides will answer. Your insides already know.
Starting with a calm, peaceful meditation will eventually slow down the frenetic rush you normally felt. One morning you’ll have coffee with a co-worker, and you’ll hear them complain about the rush and the busy-ness, and you’ll realize how you’ve stepped out of the rat race. You’re not stressing. You’re not struggling to keep up. Thoughts come easily and work is fun.
After you’ve learnt to stop, you can take on the next thing: if that’s nutrition, go at it. If it’s exercise, do it with all you’ve got. Always one thing at a time until you’ve got it down.
